Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Toll House Inn owner Ruth Wakefield in 1930 because she ran out of baker’s chocolate and substituted it with semi-sweetened chocolate broken up and mixed into the dough. Today, 7 billion chocolate chip cookies are consumed annually.
